In-Depth Information
Natural composition of shapes and forms we
can see in a landscape acts as an incentive to seek
a corresponding balance in a picture. One can see
repetition of planes, find out how the position of a
horizon alters depending on the terrain configura-
tion, and how the density of objects and actions
changes with the proximity of a city (Figure 10).

Analysis of Art Principles in Art
Works
Movement
Artists sometimes exaggerate parts of their paint-
ings to stress the importance of the depicted
objects. For example, in the style of Symbolism,
the mostly French artistic movement from the late
nineteenth century, things were painted out of pro-
portion at the cost of realism to convey otherworld
ideas, unusual feelings, and states of mind. The
giant's huge eye in “The Cyclops” created by the
French painter Odilon Redon (1840-1916, http://

terrifies the viewer like in a nightmare. Artists
painting in the Surrealist mode created figurative
The illusion of movement may be achieved by
the use of lines, colors, values, textures, forms
and space, to direct the eye of the viewer from
one part of the picture to another. For example,
the feeling of movement can be suggested by an
arrangement of shapes. Some possibilities are
circular, diagonal or vertical arrangements; we
may also create illusion of movement that goes
back into the distance, both by diminution of sizes
and similarity of shapes.

Your Visual Response: A Scene with Balloons, Some of Them Escaping
Draw a scene with balloons, first a balanced one, and then you may want to emphasize your own balloon. You may choose to draw air
balloons with people in consoles focusing on one your friends ride in.
Sketch a clown invited to a birthday party to play tricks with balloons trying to hide one, or create some projects for a balloon logo to be
used by dealers who sell homes or cars.
In a scene with colorful balloons, show a balloon escaping out of control and disappearing in the sky. Show dynamics beyond someone's
effort trying to catch them.
