Positive and Negative Space
Perspective
Space also describes the void between solid shapes
and forms. The solid shape or form is called a
positive space. The space within the drawn ob-
jects is a positive space; a doughnut has a positive
shape or form. He space between the objects is a
negative space; the doughnut hole is a negative
shape or space.
See Table 9 for Your Visual Response.
The appearance of depth or distance on a flat
surface is called perspective. We live in a three-
dimensional world of depth and distance, but we
are picturing world on a two-dimensional surface
of a piece of paper or a computer screen. The use of
perspective enables us to show objects and scenes
as they appear to the eye, with relation to implied
depth on a flat surface of the picture. Designing
a three-dimensional display may involve visual
thinking in many ways. Perspective drawing is one

Your Visual Response: The Positive and Negative Space
To picture a coexistence of the positive and negative space on your drawing of houses you may now want to assign a selected color (for
example, violet) to the negative space in the open windows and doors.
