How do I manage my working flock?
Short answer: Maintain a productive flock by culling old hens and
extra roosters.
Once you've set up your chicken tractor or pasture and bought your hens, your chickens
require very little care. In the morning, you should move their tractor to a new stretch of
grass (or assess the state of your pasture), feed them their pellets or mash, make sure they
have fresh water, and take all of the eggs out of their nest box. In the evening, throw in any
kitchen scraps you've accumulated during the day, check on their water, and take in any new
eggs. All told, care of your small flock should take less than half an hour a day .
Your hens should lay almost one egg per hen per day while they are young during
spring, summer, and fall. In winter, egg production will drop, but can be aided by adding
