She's so cute! Can I name her?
Short answer: No.
In my opinion, this is the biggest mistake beginning chicken owners can make. Every
bird in a self-sufficient, working chicken flock will eventually be eaten. Do you really
want to eat Blossom?
Chickens are a lot of fun and each one has her own personality. You'll enjoy throwing
your kitchen scraps into their pen and watching the hens chase each other around the coop
after a rotten tomato.
You want to keep your chickens happy and healthy. Cruelty is not part of the equation.
But when the time comes, you have to remember that your chickens are livestock and you
must be willing to slit their throats. Otherwise you'll become an old-chicken's home with a
flock of hens who give you an egg a week between them.
