How many chickens should I get?
Short answer: Three hens per person.
The number of chickens you need depends on how much meat and how many eggs you
eat. We recommend starting out with an egg-laying flock that provides all your eggs along
with an occasional meat bird.
The size of your first flock is based on how many eggs your family eats per year:
An average person eats about 300 eggs a year.
An average Golden Comet hen lays about 300 eggs per year (more in the sum-
mer than winter.)
Two hens is just about right for the average person.
