Limits and challenges of optical
very-high-spatial-resolution satellite
remote sensing for urban applications
Paolo Gamba, Fabio Dell'Acqua, Mattia Stasolla, Giovanna
Trianni and Gianni Lisini
This chapter discussed the major challenges and limits when using very-high-spatial-resolution (VHR) optical
remote sensor data for monitoring human settlements. Specifically, the discussion centers on the spectral aspects,
mapping limits and challenges in connection to urban change analysis. Then, an integrated adaptive spatial
approach is proposed to help deal with the challenges, followed by an example of the major research lines still to be
pursued in this active field. Finally, the chapter discusses some interesting results using VHR data for damage
mapping in connection to major events.
