positive-sense, single-stranded RNA (from the ICTV; http://www.ncbi.nlm.
nih.gov/ICTVdb).
A few studies have been published in which enveloped VNPs were used
for a nanotechnology application. For safe use in materials VLPs or UV-
inactivated particles were exploited and integrated into polyelectrolyte
thin films (Fischlechner
., 2006).
The incorporation of VNPs into supported membranes may lead to the
development of novel nanoscale devices for diagnostics. The immobilization
of VNPs on supports and potential applications is discussed in Chapter 7.

To date, approximately 20 of 5,000 discovered viruses have been exploited
for applications in nanotechnology. Each VNP has different characteristics
that can be exploited. Some platforms have been extensively studied; others
are still new to the field. Based on the enormous variety of structural and
physicochemical properties available, viral nanotechnology has great
potential and it is expected that over the years more and more platforms will
be evaluated.
