In-Depth Information
Vascularization of large tissue engineered constructs is to date still one of the
main limitations in tissue engineering. Various strategies, including the
interaction of cell sources, different growth factors and synthetic and natural
polymers, are currently being investigated for pre-vascularisation of large,
volume tissue-engineered structures in vitro , or for the recruitment of a
neovasculature in situ using therapeutic angiogenesis for collateral vessel
formation in ischemic tissue. The development of hybrid biomaterials to provide
optimized growth factor delivery will provide significant advances in this field.
