2.7 Spatial Databases
So far we have discussed binary vector formats that are widely used by geospatial
analysts, but we have only briefly mentioned some of the more advanced formats that
are used to store geospatial data. Relational databasemanagement systems (RDBMS)
have traditionally been used for large-scale GIS projects, but with the wide availabil-
