Appendix B
Installation of Software
This appendix provides a series of instructions relating to the installation of the
Open Source GeoSpatial Foundation's Virtual Machine (OSGeo-VM) as well as
different ways of installing GDAL/OGR, third party tools and setting up a Python
virtual environment. It is beyond the scope of this appendix (and the topic) to provide
very detailed instructions for each and every Operating System and configuration,
but we intend to provide the basic information for the novice user to get up and
running.
B.1
Installation of OSGeo Virtual Machine
The OSGeo maintains OSGeo-Live, a Linux based (Lubuntu) distribution that
contains a wide range of pre-configured OSGeo packages. OSGeo-Live can be down-
loaded for free from the OSGeo website 18 as a Live DVD, bootable ISO image and
a Virtual Machine (VM). We are aware that many readers will already be familiar
with Linux-based Operating Systems as well as the OSGeo packages, but we also
acknowledge that some readers may be aware and interested in Linux, but have not
had an opportunity to install or use it. For those readers interested in familiarizing
themselves with these packages, we consider that the VM is a very practical way of
having a Linux OS running within Windows quickly with a minimum of installation
and configuration. In particular, it means that the novice user can run a Linux enabled
environment within the host Windows Operating System, without the need to modify
the underlying host computer. In addition, it allows the reader to test Linux and run
the scripts and programs outlined in the topic.
