The characteristics of the multispectral bands are presented in Table 17.1 .The
metadata (MTL) file contains information on the acquisition date and time, path
and row numbers, bounding box, Sun azimuth and elevation angles, etc. It also
provides details on the processing level. In this case, products are indicated as
DATA_TYPE=L1T . This means data have been processed to a standard terrain
correction, which provides systematic radiometric and geometric accuracy. Geomet-
ric correction is performed by incorporating ground control points and employing
a Digital Elevation Model (DEM) for topographic accuracy. 1 At the time of publi-
cation of this topic, atmospherically corrected data for Landsat 8 (level 2 products)
were not yet available for download.
17.1.1 Create Cloud Mask
Depending on the time of the year and the location on Earth, the satellite image
scenes can contain some clouds. The images used within this case study contain
