Papallacta Hot Springs
The Papallacta Hot Springs are an exclusive collection of thermal baths, hot springs and
spas located in the village of Papallacta about 45 minutes east of Quito. Dipping into these
baths that range in temperature from 86°F and 158°F isn't just a toxin-eliminating experi-
ence, but a scenic one as well. The baths are nestled between the Antisana and Cayambe
volcanoes and being in such a warm, serene setting contrasts greatly to the icy Andean
peaks you're surrounded by. The hot springs fill up with Quiteños on weekends so the
best time to visit is during weekends. Accommodations run from basic to luxurious, as
does the food.
Mindo
Mindo is a sleepy village settled on the western slopes of the Andean cloud forest region.
It's enveloped by vast evergreens whose canopies are swept by clouds and eventually ab-

to tourists, who stream in and out of town on a steady basis but peak during weekends and
holidays. The center itself is characterized by Parque Central that comes alive at night
when a calm buzz of food vendors, families and local hippies gather around its fountain
centerpiece to enjoy each others' company. The village and its outskirts range from about
3,900 to 15,000 ft (1200 to 4780 m) above sea level with temperatures in the 60s and 70s
all year. The default dress code is shorts, tank tops and flip flops but don't forget your
raincoat as showers are common. The climate is driest from May to September.
A stay in Mindo can include visits to one of its several butterfly or orchid farms inter-
spersed by indulgent breaks at the local brewery or chocolate factory. Cacao, coffee beans
and fruits that bloom in the area bring a sense of freshness to every meal and it's no sur-
