Sunset in Baños
The Church of The Virgin of Holy Water (Ambato between 16 de Diciembre and 12 de
Noviembre) is Baños' central figure, usually seen as a symbol for the city itself. The neo-
Gothic style sanctuary is actually made with volcanic rocks and features a fascinating
little museum upstairs. At night its white spires are uplit by blue spotlights, dramatically
illuminating the church and the broad Parque San Sebastián it faces, where women sell
rosaries by day and grilled street food at night. Two blocks down the main street (Am-
bato) stands another leafy plaza, the Parque Central Palomino Flores (Ambato and Vi-
cente Rocafuerte between Maldonado and Halflants) which is adorned with native tree
species and features a beautiful water fountain at its center. Between the two parks is
Baños' main food market side-by-side with the Artisanal Walk, a foot traffic-only street
lined with handmade jewelry, art and clothing stands. This area is within walking distance
of banks, supermarkets, great restaurants and bars, tour agencies and plenty of accommod-
ation options.
There are an incredible amount of tour operators in Baños, but the city's signature chiva
bus tours remains a main draw, especially for national tourists. The wooden open-air
busses are multicolored and outfitted with blaring stereo systems and bright, flashing
