La Catedral De Riobamba
Climbing
At over 20,000 ft (6,267 m) Chimborazo is the furthest point from the Earth, Ecuador's
highest peak, a symbol of the country itself. When you see its dominating figure on the
horizon, all you want to do it climb it. Its summit lingers way above the cloud line and
when reached, affords a view of every other peak in Volcano Avenue poking above the
clouds below. Such a task doesn't require long-time mountaineering experience, but does
demand a very good physical condition and several days' acclimatization in nearby cities,
towns and refugios (climber's refuges) along the way. Ascents are usually two days long,
with the first night spent in a mountain refuge, a stopover the next evening to another
refuge for a nap before climbing toward the summit around 1am and reaching the refuge
again around noon. It's a challenging but rewarding experience that's a must for moun-
taineers.
