Yasuní National Park
Like a broad green swath painted upon Ecuador's map, Yasuní National Park takes up
over 3,000 square miles in the East, making in the country's most expansive mainland
park. It represents Ecuador's most pristine virgin rainforest and accounts for most of the
animal life in the country, not to mention that of the world. Over 60% of the country's
mammals can be found here, like jaguars, pumas and bizarre-looking tapirs. Unfortu-
nately, drilling in and around the reserve has been conducted since the 1960s despite inter-
national regulations, indigenous resistance and long-standing lawsuits, but in those re-
gions opened to tourists, you would never know. The tranquil waters and flooded forests
full of wildlife make for an unforgettable getaway that shouldn't be missed on a visit to
Ecuador.
The only way to get there is on an extended tour, lodge stay or volunteer project. Several
small cruise lines even escort travelers on Yasuní's waters, equipped with air-conditioned
cabins dining areas and a bar-lounge.
