In-Depth Information
Río Muchacho Organic Farm
Río Muchacho is one of two coastal organic farms in Ecuador, hidden just 15 minutes
from Canoa (but usually reached on horseback) on 27 acres of tropical forest. The organ-
ization, which is operated by an Ecuadorian and New Zealander, supports about 92 local
families who either work on the farm, sell handicrafts to visitors, teach in the commu-
nity's eco-schools or work in areas of tourism on the land. Río Muchacho is completely
solar-powered with composting toilets and eco-friendly but comfortable cabins that can
accommodate up to 50 people, who come to volunteer with the animals, learn how to
make tagua nut jewelry, take a trek to a howler monkey hangout or take an intensive per-
maculture course. Río Muchacho, which rests on its namesake river, was even named one
of the 13 best examples of sustainable tourism by the Quebecois TV station Another Way
to Travel. Stop by their office in Canoa to find out how to visit or check out their website
