Food
Don't expect much of a fine dining scene in Esmeraldas - most restaurants serve typical
coastal food in unassuming, but bright establishments. Some are just plastic chairs set up
along the beach, but all have excellent seafood! Inspired by African, Ecuadorian and indi-
genous traditions, plates range from simple and succulent to exotic and unforgettable, and
it's no wonder why 'food pride' in the region borders on fanatical. If you're going to have
lobster anywhere in Ecuador, it should be here.
•
Las Redes
Bolívar avenue on the main plaza
$
Las Redes is a cozy spot on the central plaza with views of the church that gets packed
during lunch hour. This is
the
place to try
encocado
, or seafood marinated in coconut
milk. The encocados at Las Redes are made with shrimp and highly recommended.
•
El Típico Esmeraldeño

This traditional restaurant is located in the Las Palmas neighborhood, whose popular
beachfront hosts the crazy
Carnaval
festival as well as several other music festivals
throughout the year. El Típico Esmeraldeño suits this lusty beach, with an airy patio that's
perfect for people-watching.
