In-Depth Information
watch over the city while people dance, eat and drink in its bright bars until the sun rises
over the sea at its base.
Iguana Park
Officially known as Parque Seminario, Iguana Park (10 de Agosto and Chile avenue) is
no reserve, zoo, or aquarium, and there's no entrance fee, guide or even a cage in sight. In
fact, Iguana Park is just your run-of-the-mill park where citizens read the paper and go
about their day, except that while they go about their business, a ton of iguanas roam
freely at their feet. Kids can go right up to the iguanas to feed them mango slices and
photo ops of the prehistoric sunbathers abound. Only in Guayaquil.
Malecón Salado
The Malecón del Salado is a delightful waterfront attraction settled by a small tributary
that snakes through the city about a 30 minute walk straight from Malecón 2000 heading
west on 10 de Agosto. The city keeps developing the area, which now consists of a foot-
bridge of Austrian design decorated with suspended tents that resemble sails. At night
they are brilliantly lit up and locals flood the area to watch the choreographed water, mu-
sic and light display. The extensive site also has food vendor booths, an indoor mall with
more food (and WIFI) paths lined with monuments to important Ecuadorian leaders, trop-
ical gardens, and reflecting pools before finally leading to an open dock where boats can
be rented for rides along the canal.
Ciudad Blanca
The 'White City' is an informal title given to the Cementerio General , or city cemetery -
but wait, stick with me. Almost all of the graveyards in Latin America are held above-
ground, and the sparkly clean Greco-Roman facades of larger-than-life mausoleums that
tower above visitors in the White City definitely live up to their name. Wandering through
the ornate labyrinth of Renaissance tombstones gives one the feeling of being in a differ-
ent kind of city, definitely a quieter and cleaner one than the rest of Guayaquil! Like a
fancy ghost town, most tourists enter with trepidation and leave dazzled.
