papers). Likewise, the 'modelling' papers were allo-
cated keywords describing the nature of the model
study (global, regional, or community). Keywords
describing the geographical coverage of studies were
added to 'biological response' and 'chemistry'
papers, but only when the location was clearly stated
(Fig. 1.2E). These keywords were not used for studies
using long-term laboratory-cultured organisms or
when organisms were collected remotely from the
laboratory where the study took place. Finally, the
articles were tagged with the country of afi liation of

articles (see Section 1.4.1), the i eld started to receive
increased attention only at the end of the 1980s, and
most ocean acidii cation papers have only been pub-
lished in the last few years (Fig. 1.2A). From 1989 to
2003, the rate of publication remained relatively sta-
ble at an average of 9 articles per year. From 2004 and
onwards, the i eld experienced a sharp increase in
the number of publications from 22 articles in 2004 to
213 articles in 2010. This corresponds to a more than
ninefold increase in the number of papers published
per year between 2004 and 2010 and a 43-fold increase
from 1989 to 2010. It is worth noting that 79% of all
papers were published after 2003.
In March 2011, the time at which the database
was analysed, 105 articles were already published
or in press, indicating that the total number of arti-
cles would increase even further in 2011. It must
be pointed out that the total number of scientii c

To the authors' knowledge, the i rst paper directly
addressing an ocean acidii cation-related question
was published in 1906 (Moore et al. 1906 ). With the
