• Installing Java
• Installing Apache Ant
• Compiling Examples
• Using Eclipse
The examples in this topic require JDK 5.0 or higher. However installing JDK 6.0 or
higher is recommended. The examples were tested on both versions. This appendix shows
you how to download and install all of the software necessary to use these examples. This
includes installing Java, installing Apache Ant, as well as how to use these examples with an
IDE, such as Eclipse.
Installing Java
The current version of Java can always be downloaded from the following site:
http://java.sun.com/
You should choose to download the latest version of the JDK. You do not need to down-
load the version that includes NetBeans, unless you plan on using NetBeans.
NetBeans and Eclipse are both Integrated Development Environments (IDEs) that en-
hance the Java development and debugging process. Later in this appendix, there is informa-
tion about using an IDE. Installation of Java occurs through a Windows installation program.
You can simply accept all the installation defaults. Figure B.1 shows the installation process.
