Conclusions
This chapter has described the design process for joint replacement implants and
the various biomaterials that are used in their manufacture. The biomaterials
used in the manufacture of implants for the ankle, fingers, hip, knee, and wrist
are metals, polymers, ceramics, and elastomers. Future developments in joint
replacement implants will include improved designs and new biomaterials to
produce longer lasting implants.
