This expansive former residence of the archbishop was built in 1685. Entry to see the
lavish interiors is by guided tour only (free audio-guide provided in English). It was
here that Franz-Josef I was crowned Emperor of Austria in 1848 at the tender age of
18.
Václavské Náměstí & Around
It's hard to believe now, but this tiny square, northeast of the centre, was where
Olomouc began. A thousand years ago, this was the site of Olomouc Castle. You can
still see the castle foundations in the lower levels of the Archdiocesan Museum. The
area still holds Olomouc's most venerable buildings and darkest secrets. Czech King
Wenceslas III (Václav III) was murdered here in 1306 under circumstances that are
still not clear to this day.
