The most fascinating structure is the Baťa company's Administration Build-
ing No 21 , also known as the Baťa Skyscraper. The 16-storey building is now
home to the local regional government, but on the 8th floor is an interesting ex-
hibition on the history of Baťa and Zlín. Also, don't miss the quirky paternoster
elevator - two-person lifts that are continuously rotating: jump on...jump
off...jump on again (don't blame us if you give it a second go). You'll find them in
the side entrance to the regional government offices. In the same corner of the
building is Tomáš Baťa's amazing office , which was also a self-contained lift
that could travel up and down the building.
The best way to reach Zlín is by bus: there are regular links to Brno (100Kč,
two hours) and Olomouc (80Kč, 1¾ hours).
Olomouc
Explore
Olomouc is a sleeper. Practically unknown outside the Czech Republic and underap-
preciated even at home, the city is surprisingly majestic. The main square counts
among the country's very nicest, surrounded by historic buildings and blessed with a
Unesco-protected trinity column. The evocative central streets are dotted with beauti-
ful churches, testifying to the city's long history as a bastion of the Catholic Church.
Explore the foundations of ancient Olomouc Castle at the must-see Archdiocesan Mu-
seum ( CLICK HERE ), then head for one of the city's many pubs or microbreweries.
Don't forget to try the cheese, Olomoucký sýr, reputedly the smelliest in the Czech
Republic.
