republic's oldest Romanesque structures and contains a beautiful series of 12th-cen-

tegic position on the border between Austria and Moravia, and there's been a fortress
here since the late 11th century. The castle has served as a residence for Moravian
margraves (nobles), a garrison, and even housed a brewery in the 18th century. In
1335, King John of Luxembourg held a wedding ceremony here for his daughter
Anne.
During our visit, the castle was under-going renovation but was expected to re-open
in 2013.

CHURCH OF ST NICHOLAS
(kostel sv Mikuláše; www.farnostznojmo.cz ; náměstí Mikulášské; during services) This
church was once Romanesque, but has been rebuilt in Gothic style. In a side chapel is
the so-called 'Bread Madonna'. According to legend, during the Thirty Years' War a
box beneath this image was always found to be full of food, no matter how much was
removed. Beside the church is the small Orthodox St Wenceslas Chapel (kaple sv
Václava).
