In-Depth Information
Goethovo Náměstí & Around
This manicured square , edged with extravagant late 19th- and early 20th-century
buildings, probably looks much as it did when King Edward VII et al patronised the
surrounding spas and hotels. The highlights here are the Municipal Museum and the
nearby Church of the Assumption of the Virgin Mary, built in 1848 in neo-Byzantine
style.

where Goethe stayed during his last visit to Mariánské Lázně. The exhibits present a
good overview of the town's history (though only with Czech captions). Ask to see
two English-language videos on the history and geology of the area. The Church of
the Assumption of the Virgin Mary (kostel Nanebevzetí Panny Marie) is oppos-
ite the museum.
Hlavní Třída & Around
Hlavní třída, as the name implies (hlavní means 'main'), is the spa town's central
avenue , lined on one side by big hotels, cafes and resorts, and on the other by a
long, sloping park. The main attraction here, besides the cafes and the Infocentrum, is
a small museum dedicated to Polish-French composer Frédéric Chopin, who visited
the spa in 1836.
