The Great Synagogue, west of the Old Town, is the
third-largest in the world - only those in Jerusalem and Budapest are bigger. It was
built in the Moorish style in 1892 by the 2000 Jews who lived in Plzeň at the time.
The building is often used for concerts and art exhibitions.

PATTON MEMORIAL PILSEN

The Patton Memorial Pilsen details the liberation of Plzeň in
May 1945 by the American army, under General George S Patton. Especially
poignant are the handwritten memories of former American soldiers who have re-
turned to Plzeň over the years, and the museum's response to the communist-era revi-
sionist fabrications that claimed Soviet troops, not Americans, were responsible for
the city's liberation.

The Diocese Museum, in the former Franciscan monastery (klášter
Františkánů), exhibits a fine collection of church statues. The real reason to visit is to
see the little
St Barbara Chapel
(kaple sv Barbory) on the cloister's eastern side;
structurally unaltered since the 13th century, it bears the remains of decorative fres-
coes added in the 15th century.

This museum fills a magnificent agglomera-
tion of buildings. In the basement the original
armoury
(zbrojnice) features a
weapons collection. The ground floor has changing exhibits, while on the 2nd floor
the superb art-nouveau
Jubilee Hall
(Jubilejní sál) houses an exhibit of glass and
porcelain.
