Kopečku (1.5km, 30 minutes). From Na Kopečku, keep on the blue-marked trail
to Hodějov Pond (7.5km, 2½ hours). A yellow trail then runs west to Smítka
(2km, 45 minutes) where it joins a red trail heading north to Klec and a primitive
campsite (6km, two hours).
From there, for a further 13km (four hours), the red trail runs north, past more
fish ponds, forests and small villages to Veselí nad Lužnicí , a major railway
junction. Camping is allowed only in official campsites throughout the protected
landscape region. You can also ride this route on your mountain bike.
An alternative 12km leisurely route runs around the Rybník Svět ( CLICK HERE
) fish pond on a well-marked trail (around four hours), beginning just south of the
Regent Brewery ( CLICK HERE ). The trail is flagged with 16 information boards
in Czech, German and English, and also takes in the Schwarzenberg Mauso-
leum ( CLICK HERE ). Ask at the Tourist Office ( CLICK HERE ) for a map; it also
has details on other walks in the area and can help with bike-hire info.
Tábor
Explore
The town of Tábor, south of Prague, earned its place in Czech history in the 15th cen-
tury as the home of the most radical wing of the Hussite movement. These days, there
aren't many radicals left, but Tábor makes for a convenient lunch-and-a-stroll stop-
over on the trip south toward České Budějovice and Český Krumlov. The most inter-
esting sights here are Hussite-related: there's an educational museum on Hussite his-
tory, and some of the town's centuries-old underground passages, used by fighters
during wartime, have been opened to the public. There are also two excellent hotels
and a handful of clean, reasonably priced pensions.
