ing furniture and weapons. Entry is by one of three guided
tours
: Tour A takes you
through the castle's Renaissance interiors; Tour B focusses on a 19th-century Schwar-
zenberg apartment; and in summer (July and August) a third tour explores the chat-
eau's cellars.
Today's chateau dates from 1611, the replacement for a Gothic castle destroyed by
fire. Originally built by the Rožmberk family, it then became one of the main residen-
ces of the Schwarzenbergs. On the western side of the castle, the

Many Schwarzenbergs are buried in this 1877,
neo-Gothic mausoleum in Park U Hrobky, on the other side of the pond from Třeboň.
The crypt lies about 15-minute walk from the centre along well-marked paths.
TOURING A CARP POND
The area around Třeboň is dotted with literally hundreds of fish ponds, many
dating back several centuries. Eating fish is near-and-dear to the hearts of land-
locked Czechs. Indeed, the most important meal of the year, at Christmas Eve,
is centred around carp, and much of the nation's carp is raised right here.

marked trail that borders the pond for several kilometres, with helpful sign-post-
ing along the way. Part of the edge of the pond is lined with working fish
foundries, where you can see how the fish are stored and harvested for that all-
