In-Depth Information
Kutná Hora
Explore
Enriched by the silver ore that veined the surrounding hills, the medieval city of Kut-
ná Hora became the seat of Wenceslas II's royal mint in 1308, producing silver
groschen that were then the hard currency of Central Europe. Boom-time Kutná Hora
rivalled Prague in importance, but by the 16th century the mines began to run dry, and
its demise was hastened by the Thirty Years' War and the devastating fire of 1770.
The town became a Unesco World Heritage Site in 1996, luring visitors with a smor-
gasbord of historic sights. It looks its flower-bedecked best in May and June but is
worth a full day's visit at any time of year. It's a 10-minute walk from the main train
station to Sedlec Ossuary, and a further 2.5km to the Old Town.

Top Tip
Buy a return train ticket to Kutná Hora Město station, near the centre of the Old
Town, so that you don't have to walk or take a bus back to the main train station.
Getting There & Away
Bus There are only two or three direct buses a day (weekdays only) from Prague's
Florenc bus station to Kutná Hora (140Kc return, 1¼ hours); the train is a better bet.
Train There are direct trains from Prague's main train station to Kutná Hora hlavní
nádraží every two hours (196Kč return, 55 minutes). Five minutes after the arrival of
the Prague train (and before the departure of return trains) a little railcar shuttles from
platform 1 to Kutná Hora Město station (six minutes).
