EATING & DRINKING
Get away from the hordes milling up and down the main route to the castle at Restaur-
ace Pod Dračí Skálou ( 311 681 177; www.poddraciskalou.eu ; Karlštejn 130; mains
110-240Kč; 11am-11pm Mon-Sat, 11am-8pm Sun; ) , an appealing country inn with outdoor
tables and a barbecue grill, where a half-litre of Pilsner Urquell is only 25Kč. The menu
is rustic Czech, with lots of grilled or roast pork, beef and chicken. Take the first road
on the left heading up to the castle, or walk down the footpath just outside the castle
gate (red markers, signposted 'Beroun').
From the train station, you can travel to the castle in a horse-drawn cart (per per-
son 150Kč).
A SLOVAK SPECIALITY
Situated on the main road up to Karlštejn Castle, the atmospheric Restaurant U Janů
( 311 681 210; info@ujanu.cz; Karlštejn 28; mains 110-240Kč) has a decent dollop of authentic
charm, and a menu that includes the Slovak speciality, halušky (bacon and cheese
dumplings).
