Every capital has its 'famous' cemetery, where the heroes of the nation are bur-
ied. Think Père Lachaise in Paris or Highgate in London. In Prague, the prime
piece of permanent real estate is here at Vyšehrad. Music lovers will want to see
the graves of Czech greats Antonín Dvořák and Bedřich Smetana. But even if
you're not familiar with the Czech pantheon, you'll enjoy the intricately designed
headstones, lovely gardens and peaceful, reflective atmosphere.
A 'Who's Who' of Czech Luminaries
The cemetery got its start in the 19th century, when the parish graveyard was first
made into a memorial for famous figures of Czech culture.
The 600 or so graves in the cemetery read like a 'who's who' in Czech arts and let-
ters. In addition to the graves of composers Smetana and Dvořák, noted writers Karel
