ECOTECHNICAL MUSEUM

This museum is located in Prague's historic sewage-treatment plant, which dates from
the late-19th century. Guided tours (book in advance) take you through the labyrinth
of sewers beneath the building. The main attraction is the vast amount of machinery
needed to service a bustling 19th-century city. The plant was originally designed to
service a city of 500,000 but remained in operation until 1967, when the city's popu-
lation had already exceeded a million.
WORTH A DETOUR: TROJA CHATEAU
This chateau (Zámek Troja; www.ghmp.cz ; U Trojského Zámku 1, Troja; adult/concession
120/60Kč; 10am-6pm Tue-Sun Apr-Oct, closed Nov-Mar; Nádraží Holešovice, 112) is a
17th-century baroque palace built for the Šternberk family, inspired by Roman
country villas seen by the architect on a visit to Italy. A visit to the chateau can
easily be combined with a trip to Prague Zoo, since the two are side by side. It's
also a pleasant 20-minute walk from Stromovka park, including crossing a dra-
matic footbridge over the Vltava.
The sumptuously decorated palace now houses collections of the Prague City
Gallery and exhibits explaining the sculptures and frescoes that adorn the
palace itself. There's free admission to the grounds, where you can wander in
the beautiful French gardens, watched over by a gang of baroque stone giants
on the balustrade outside the southern door.
