VINOHRADY'S VINEYARDS
Prague is generally known for beer, not wine. And that's probably for good reas-
on. It may come as a surprise, then, that several centuries ago vineyards in
Prague produced a substantial amount of wine, and the centre of this activity
was in Vinohrady (which means literally 'vineyards'). Vinohrady, so the story
goes, got its start in wine-making all the way back in the 14th century, when Em-
peror Charles IV ordered the first grapes to be planted. The vineyards lasted
around 400 years before the area was given over mostly to farms and eventually
luxury townhouses. A small section of the vineyards survives to this day around
the area of the Viniční Altán ( CLICK HERE ) open-air wine garden.

DRINKING & NIGHTLIFE
It may lack some of Žižkov's authentic grit, but Vinohrady is a great area for bar-
and cafe-hopping. Check out the streets surrounding Peace Square (náměstí
Míru), particularly along Americká, as well as Mánesova and those around the
big park, Riegrovy sady, which has either Prague's best or second-best open-air
beer garden (depending on whom you ask and where they live). Vinohrady is
also the centre of Prague's gay life, and you'll find many gay-friendly cafes and
clubs here.

(Riegrovy sady, Vinohrady; noon-1am summer only; 11, Jiřího z Poděbrad) There's a
good-natured rivalry between this beer garden and the one across the river at Letná as
to which one is best. We're not sure, but this one is pretty good. Order beers at the bar
and carry them to your table. To find it, go to Polská, turn up Chopínova, and enter
the park across from Na Švíhance.
