In-Depth Information
In 2009 the museum expanded into the old Radio Free Europe/Radio Liberty building
next door. The so-called New Building now hosts changing exhibitions on various
historical, scientific and technological themes. These range from subjects such as the
gold treasure of Košice (a hoard of gold coins and jewellery discovered in Slovakia in
1935), famous Czech and Slovak inventors, and 100 years of the Olympic games, to
an exhibition on Czechoslovakia under communist rule, which provided some grimly
fascinating insights into this dark period of recent history. Between 1948 and 1989 at
least 280 civilians died trying to cross the border to the west. During the same period
584 of the 19,000-strong border guard died, including 185 suicides, 39 shot, and 243
through injury and accident; only 11 were killed by escapees.
