In-Depth Information
Exit the Palace Gardens on Valdštejnská and turn right, then left into the Wallen-
stein Palace and through the courtyard to the Wallenstein Garden . Head
for the northeastern corner and leave through the gate beside Malostranská
metro station. Turn right on Klárov and continue along U Lužického Semináře. A
gate on the right leads to the Vojan Gardens , a peaceful corner where local
folk sit in the sun on the park benches.
Continue along U Lužického Semináře and bear left across the little bridge over
the Čertovka (Devil's Stream). Pass under Charles Bridge and through the pic-
turesque square of Na Kampě into the leafy riverside park known as Kampa
(from the Latin campus, meaning 'field'), one of the city's favourite chill-out
zones and home to the modern art collections of the Kampa Museum .
Retrace your steps and bear left along Hroznová, a backstreet that leads to a
bridge over the Čertovka beside a water wheel. The bridge is covered in pad-
locks placed there by young couples as a sign of enduring love (a fad inspired
by Italian novelist Federico Moccia).
The bridge leads to a tiny cobbled square with the John Lennon Wall on
one side and the baroque palace that houses the French embassy on the other.
The far end of the square curves right, past the severe Gothic towers of the
Church of Our Lady Below the Chain. Turn left opposite the church and bear
right along Prokopská; cross busy Karmelitská and turn right.
Just past the bar called U malého Glena is an alley on your left that leads to the
Vrtbov Garden , one of Malá Strana's least visited but most beautiful gar-
dens.
