Cubist
In just one decade (1910-20), barely half a dozen architects bequeathed to Prague a
unique legacy of buildings that were influenced by the Cubist art movement. The Cu-
bist style spurned the regular lines of traditional architecture and the sinuous forms of
art nouveau in favour of triangular and pyramidal forms, emphasising diagonals rather
than horizontals and verticals and achieving a jagged, almost crystalline effect.
Some of Prague's finest Cubist houses can be seen in the neighbourhood below the
Vyšehrad fortress. Another appealing example is the House of the Black Madonna
(1912) in Staré Město, which houses the Museum of Czech Cubism ( CLICK HERE ) .
Prague also boasts a Cubist lamp post (1915; CLICK HERE ).
