Appendix D: Tutorial for Using
the AsmIDE
D.1 Introduction
AsmIDE, a freeware IDE developed by Eric Engler, combines a simple text editor, project
manager, terminal program, and cross assemblers for developing assembly programs for the
Freescale HC11, HC12, and HCS12 microcontrollers. The latest version of AsmIDE can be
downloaded from www.geocities.com/englere_geo.
D.2 Starting the AsmIDE
The AsmIDE can be started by clicking on its icon. The screen should look like Figure D.1
after the AsmIDE is started. The upper half of the window in Figure D.1 is used to enter the
assembly program. The lower half of the AsmIDE window is used to display messages after an
assembly process or as the terminal window to communicate with the D-Bug12 monitor.

D.3 Communicating with the Demo Board
To communicate with the demo board with its MCU programmed with the D-Bug12 mon-
itor, click on Terminal in the lower half of the AsmIDE window. After this, the lower half
becomes the terminal window. Press the reset button of the demo board and the screen will
change to Figure D.2.
