£FREE - Whitechapel has a gruesome history, the streets notorious for Jack
the Ripper murders and prostitution. Like almost everywhere in East Lon-
don, it's now a funky place of graffiti and a creative crowd. Head to White-
chapel Art Gallery and discover walls of artwork from the world's great
contemporary artists; some works are from the next big thing and others are

Step back in history with the time capsule attraction of Dennis Severs'
House. It's been designed to recreate snapshots of life in London from 1724
to 1914, and the silent tours have an eery poignancy. It's almost as if the res-

Shoreditch and Brick Lane offer amazing value food and a chance to sample delights from
all around the world. In essence you've got three options, each equally tantalizing.
££ - Admire the smells emanating from the Bangaldeshi half of Brick
Lane , a world famous center for curry restaurants. The fierce competition
for diners makes prices fantastically cheap, with almost all offering two
courses and a beer for less than £15. Most offer similar menus of authentic
Bangladeshi fare and advertise some obscure award they've won. The qual-
ity is high across the board, although it's worth wandering the whole street
before choosing where to dine. Packed out dining rooms are usually the best
indicator of quality.
£ - On the other half of Brick Lane, you'll find food markets and street
stalls , the culinary delights coming from every corner of the globe. It's great
for a quick, cheap, and filling lunch. Choose to sample a few treats from dif-
ferent countries or sit down with a huge tray from one stall. Or follow the
queues to the most famous eatery here, the Brick Lane Beagle Bake .
£££ - Shoreditch's gentrification has brought about an eclectic cast of bars
