How to Use London's Public Transport
(Without Getting Lost!)
Running since 1863 and continuing to expand across the city, The London Underground is
London's arteries, transporting around 4million passengers each day. There's a wonderful
iconicity to the underground signs, as well as a beauty to some of the old Victorian tiled sta-
tions. However, the underground can be an unruly beast at peak times, the narrow corridors
throbbing with crowds and queues. While Londoners may love a good moan about the ser-
vices on offer, the city has wonderfully efficient and wide reaching public transport. It's not
just the Underground, a network of gleaming red double decker buses also do the rounds, as
do similarly famous black cabs and an overground rail service.
With congestion charges and never ending one-way systems, this certainly isn't a city for
hiring a car. Knowing how to use London's public transport is essential. Here's what you
need to know.
