In-Depth Information
Brixton has a great roster of underground clubs, the music policy often veer-
ing into drum and bass and seriously heavy electronic sounds. From the out-
side they look a little dodgy. But it's all smiles and live music inside. J amm
is great for live hip hop and Plan B is a classic industrial furnished chic
nightclub (both on Brixton Rd). Two bigger venues are the long-running
Dogstar (Coldharbour Lane) and Mass (inside the converted St Matthews
Church). Both ooze urban authenticity and have three rooms of music.
Four gastro pubs around Clapham and Balham exude the new South London
chic. You could come for a feed, or a few quiet beers, or some moves to
live music; they suit any and every mood. Try the Regent Balham , the
Clapham North , the Old Frizzle , and the Four 'o' Nine .
London's trendy elite always like to outdo each other with novel ideas. Take
open-air Peckham bar Frank's Cafe , situated on top of a multistory car
park and specializing in Aperol spritz (that's a prosecco based cocktail).
With the endless views it's great when the sun is out. 10 Th Floor, Peckham
Multistory Car Park.
The antique wood-paneled rooms of the Gowlett in Peckham provided an
aristocratic edge to a working class pub. 62 Gowlett Road.
