Chapter 11
South London
Ignore the North Londoners when they tell you not to visit South London. It's a vastly dif-
ferent side to the city, a mingling multicultural pot of modernism, working class boroughs,
and the next generation of student trendies. On the surface, there's little to shout about. Other
than a couple of attractions along the river, South London doesn't have the appeal of else-
where. But it's the place to come if you want to get off the beaten track.
Definitions of South London are always mutating and changing, the gentrified rebuilt neigh-
borhoods always quick to try and loose the tag of being “south.” This guide keeps it simple,
considering South London to be everything south of the River Thames, except for the South
Bank (see Central London 7.5).
