or the actual data itself as previously established. Because critical naviga-
tional information is available for all data within the enterprise warehouse,
the system is able to obtain any and all elements requested by the end user
without prior data requirements being defined.
As shown in Exhibit 8, the key functions provided by the access compo-
nent include
User interface.
This provides user-initiated data request interface ei-
ther directly or by an application that interacts with the end user.
Catalog.
This presents the contents of the business information direc-
tory to the user.
Data retrieval.
This retrieves data from any source known to the busi-
ness information directory.
Security.
This ensures security through user identification and authen-
tication.
Transparency.
This provides consistent navigation regardless of data
location or platform.
Monitoring.
This monitors user access to data.
