databases separated from the applications and users so that database
configuration, performance, product, and technical advances are trans-
parent to the development of the enterprise's information presentation
and transaction systems.
Distribution establishes the bridges and hooks by which the applica-
tions address obtaining data from the data warehouse. This approach elim-
inates the need for each application to develop its own access procedures
and, more important, permits managed control and synchronization of all
enterprise data to ensure delivery of a single logical data image. In addi-
tion, all movement, modifications, and updates to a data element by an
authorized application are reflected in a timely manner to all users of that
element regardless of function, application, platform, or location.
As shown in Exhibit 7, the key functions provided by the distribution
component include:
Distribution.
This refers to all managed client data warehouses, includ-
ing intermediary nodes, client/servers, Wide Area Networks, LANs,
and personal workstations.
Connectivity.
This refers to elements and rows because data is created
separately from the application. Links and connectors are provided to
applications for data availability.
