In-Depth Information
data-oriented projects that adopt them. Larger, more complex modeling
efforts will experience the greatest benefits. An organization's most com-
plex entities are usually the type of entities that can be most helped by
these approaches (e.g., PRODUCT, CUSTOMER, and ORDER).
SUMMARY
The goal-oriented approach to supertype and subtype modeling
requires that IS management articulate a clear vision of the types of appli-
cations that must be built in the future. Data administration managers
should establish a data architecture that can articulate the goals that must
be achieved by subtype modeling. Performance, security, and control
thresholds must be established to determine which modeling approaches
are appropriate on a project-by-project basis. Application development
managers must establish an application architecture that can determine
the situations that require tabularization. Finally, business and applica-
tions analysts must be trained in the proper techniques necessary to put
these architectures into practice.
