the new digital economic environment, they have created the expectation
that this disaggregation will occur throughout the large conglomerates at
the same speed. This may not be the case.
E-BUSINESS AND E-COMMERCE
If one rolls back the clock just one or two years, one might remember
that these early adopters of the Internet or the digital economy were
referred to as players within the realm of e-Commerce. The label here is
quite important. Labeling them as e-Commerce players as opposed to e-
Business players is quite appropriate. Most of these new organizations
were involved in one way or another with selling and marketing (see
Exhibit 7-4). Selling and marketing over the Internet is most appropriately
referred to as e-Commerce. Central to this type of activity are secured
financial transactions, and the backend integration to enterprise resource
planning (ERP) applications for accounting and fulfillment. There may also
be some limited customer relationship management (CRM) activity at the
front end. The important point from the perspective of this discussion is
that most e-Commerce activities, such as order transactions, billing,
accounting, and interfaces to ERP and CRM applications, primarily involve
structured data.
E-Business is far more than just e-Commerce (see Exhibit 7-5). This is not
to underestimate or belittle the transformation from the old brick-and-mortar
selling and marketing to that of e-Commerce. There are tremendous challenges
