In-Depth Information
Monkey Bar Avaroa, opposite Hotel Tuich 03 8922611. As unique in its own way as
Moskkito , and with great bar staff and oven-baked pizzas to boot, this engaging Bolivian-
owned bar has its own cache of outlandish cocktails (how about Dengue, Blow Job, or Hot
Spiders in the Body…?). In line, perhaps, with their “Welcome to the jungle” motto, the mu-
sic policy is slightly more rock-centric with classic Guns'n'Roses, Led Zeppelin, The Doors
and Creedence, and though the space is less intimate, the clientele is sometimes more evenly
balanced between gringos and locals. Daily 9am till late.
Moskkito Jungle Bar & Lounge Vaca Diez 03 8922267, moskkito.com . Something
of a legend unto itself, this convivial bar continues to cater superbly to the adventured-out
backpacker with cold beer, queasily named cocktails (Delirium Tremens, Jungle Wet Dreams
or Anti-Yellow Fever anyone?) in the Bs20-30 range, pool, darts and an immense, 90s-cent-
ric CD collection (featuring the requisite Manu Chao and everything from Santana to The
Cardigans) all set in a mellow jungle atmosphere. Daily 3am-3pm.
Oscar's Inthehillstothenorthoftown 038922710. Rurrenabaque'sequivalentofabeach
bar, this swimming pool eyrie is routinely packed out with people who've either returned
from a tour, or are killing time till a tour leaves, and what a spot to do it in, with a glori-
ous view back down over the Beni, not least at sundown when the heavens blush a roaring
orange-red. Especially popular with Rurre's resident Israelis. Daily, hours vary.
SHOPPING
La Cambita Avaroa and Santa Cruz 7157 8493. This small yet perfectly formed artesania
store is run by Natsumi Kawata, who buys jewellery and other craftwork from surrounding
communities and sells them in her professionally laid-out shop. Each piece of work is ini-
tialledwiththenameoftheartistandacorrespondingboardprovidesanameandphotograph.
Daily 8am-9pm.
RHEMA Corner of Avaroa and 18 de Noviembre 03 8922173. Don't miss this fascin-
ating artisans' collective, housed in a hulking palm-thatched building. The disarmingly warm
families who live and work here (ask for Ivan) will be only too pleased to show you around
the workshop area where they create all manner of traditionally worked bowls, vases, cook-
ing implements, etc. from jacaranda, balsa and assorted hardwoods, modelled after the re-
gion's flora and fauna, and finished with natural, vegetable-based varnish. Much of the stuff
ends up in the fairer trade outlets in La Paz. At present they use only off-cuts of wood, though
they plan to purchase land, which they can re-forest for their own sustainable supply. If the

11am-6pm.
