SAN JOSÉ DE CHIQUITOS
By train
The train station (
ferroviariaoriental.com
) is two blocks north and four blocks
east of the plaza. Trains to Santa Cruz (around 5-7hr) pass through late at night; trains head-
ing towards Quijarro (around 8-12hr) near the Brazilian border call in slightly earlier. There
are a dozen services weekly in each direction; the Ferrobus is the quickest and most comfort-
able option. Buy tickets in advance from the train station.
By bus
Buses along the bumpy - but passable, even in rainy season - road to San Ignacio
arrive and depart from the offices of the two bus companies that serve the route: Trans Carre-
ton, a block east of the plaza; and Trans Universal, four blocks north of the plaza beyond the
petrol station on the road out of town. The once-daily buses to San Ignacio (5-6hr) tend to
leave early in the morning, but you should check the latest timetables when you arrive. There
is also usually a service ortwo to Santa Cruz (16-17hr),though the train is a far better option.

There is an intermittently open tourist office on Moreno, near the
church (officially Mon-Fri 9am-noon & 3-5pm; 03 9643057).
SAN IGNACIO DE VELASCO

There's a small tourist office in the Casa de Cultura, just off the main
plaza (Mon-Fri 9am-noon & 3-5pm; 03 9622056). SERNAP has an office at Bolívar 87
(Mon-Fri 9am-noon & 2.30-4pm; 03 3932747) - call in here if you're planning to visit
Parque Nacional Noel Kempff Mercado.
