The
Catedral de San Ignacio
stands on the north side of the plaza. The town's magnificent
original church collapsed in 1948 - the attempt to rebuild it in the style of the original is
spoiled by the ugly modern concrete bell tower but otherwise well executed, though the
paintedfacadedecoratedwithstatuesofsaints,eachaccompaniedbyananimal,isifanything
too neat and symmetrical. The
interior
still houses many of the original statues of saints and
magnificent carved Baroque altarpieces that graced the old mission church.
