Pizzeria Napolitana Plaza 25 de Mayo 30. Sucre's longest-established Italian restaurant
serves reasonable pizza and pasta, home-made ice cream, strong coffee and six different set
lunches (Bs30). Open daily except Tues.
La Taverne Arce 35. The Alliance Française's restaurant, tucked away in a tranquil little
courtyard, has a mix of French standards and international dishes from as far away as In-
dia and Thailand (mains Bs32-42). All are well prepared, and presented with flair. There's a
good value four-course lunch (Bs45) too. Mon-Sat 9am-11pm.
Tentaciones Arenales 11. New restaurant with amiable staff, relaxed vibe and an inviting
menu featuring home-made pastas (Bs32-40), fondue (Bs120 for four people), cheese and
cured meat boards (don't miss the Bolivian-made Serrano ham), gourmet coffee and Bolivian
wines. Daily 8am-10.30pm.
SUCRE'S CULINARY DELIGHTS
The salteñas (meat-filled pasties) in Sucre are rightly considered Bolivia's best, and locals
consume them with a passion - they're available from stalls and handcarts throughout the
city, and from specialist salteñerias , which open only from mid-morning to noon and serve
almost nothing else. Another local specialty is chorizos chuquisaqueños , spicy pork saus-
ages sold in the market and in restaurants. Sucre is also famous throughout Bolivia for the
quality and variety of its chocolates , which you'll find on sale at specialist shops on Calle
Arenales, just off the plaza; Para Ti at #7 is the pick of the bunch, and has a delightful café .
SALTEÑERIAS
Paso del Los Abuelos Bustillos 216. Smart salteñeria where Sucre's wealthier citizens go
for their mid-morning snacks: at Bs6 each, the salteñas are relatively expensive, but worth
every cent. Mon-Sat for breakfast and lunch.
El Patio SanAlberto18. Popular salteñeria servingrich,juicy salteñas (Bs3-5)inabeautiful
colonial patio filled with bougainvillea and other flowering plants. Mon-Fri mornings only.
CAFÉS AND BARS
Many of Sucre's cafés also double up as bars in the evenings; there's a lively student scene
and many places stay open into the early hours, especially at weekends.
Amsterdam Bolivar 426. Funky, wood-panelled bar decorated with modern art and photos
ofthe Dutch capital. The beer (fromBs11)isnice andcold, andthere'sagoodrange ofspirits
and wines, plus sandwiches (Bs16-18) and snacks. Wi-fi access, a book exchange and fre-
quent live music performances complete the package. Daily 3pm-late; happy hour 9-10pm.
Bibliocafé N. Ortiz 50. Bohemian bar-café, split between two adjacent sites, attracting a mix
of locals and travellers from early evening until late at night with its mellow music and in-
