Sucre's longest-established Italian restaurant
serves reasonable pizza and pasta, home-made ice cream, strong coffee and six different set
lunches (Bs30). Open daily except Tues.
La Taverne

The Alliance Française's restaurant, tucked away in a tranquil little
courtyard, has a mix of French standards and international dishes from as far away as In-
dia and Thailand (mains Bs32-42). All are well prepared, and presented with flair. There's a
good value four-course lunch (Bs45) too.

menu featuring home-made pastas (Bs32-40), fondue (Bs120 for four people), cheese and

salteñas
(meat-filled pasties) in Sucre are rightly considered Bolivia's best, and locals
consume them with a passion - they're available from stalls and handcarts throughout the
city, and from specialist
salteñerias
, which open only from mid-morning to noon and serve
almost nothing else. Another local specialty is
chorizos chuquisaqueños
, spicy pork saus-
ages sold in the market and in restaurants. Sucre is also famous throughout Bolivia for the
quality and variety of its
chocolates
, which you'll find on sale at specialist shops on Calle
Arenales, just off the plaza; Para Ti at #7 is the pick of the bunch, and has a delightful
