Casa Dorada

The looming, garish and decidely kitsch “ Gold House ” dates back to 1903. Built in the Art
Nouveau style for local businessman Moisés Navajas Ichazo and his wife Esperanza, it now
functionsasamuseumandculturalcentre.Insidemuchofthedecorhasbeenpreserved:there
are extravagant murals and frescos, crystal lamps in the dining room, and a music room with
a grand piano.
Mirador San Juan
Northwest of the city centre
On a hilltop above the city, the Mirador San Juan is a pleasant park shaded by palm trees,
withgoodviewsacrossTarija andthemountains risingabovethevalley beyond.Togetthere,
walk west along Avenida Domingo Paz then follow the Stations of the Cross up the hill to
your right.
ARRIVAL AND DEPARTURE: TARIJA
By plane The airport ( 04 6642195) is a few kilometres east of the bus station along Av Las
Américas. Departure taxes are Bs11 (domestic flights) and Bs175 (international services). A
taxi into the centre costs around Bs25; there are also frequent micros. To return to the airport
(or the bus terminal) catch a micro heading east along Av Domingo Paz, which runs along-
side the market. There are regular flights to Santa Cruz, Cochabamba and La Paz, as well as
less frequent international services to neighbouring countries.
By bus The bus terminal is ten blocks or so southeast of the city centre on Av Las Américas -
roughly twenty minutes on foot. Alternatively, take a taxi (around Bs5) or one of the frequent
micros that run along Av Las Américas. Buses depart for La Paz (4 daily; 24hr) via Oruro
(20hr) at around 5pm and for Santa Cruz (2 daily; 24hr) via Villamontes (10-12hr) at around
4pm.TherearealsoservicestoPotosi(5daily;12hr)andYacuiba(6-8daily;10-12hr).Buses
to Tupiza (2 daily; 9hr) and Villazon (1-2 daily; 8hr) depart in the morning.
CROSSING THE ARGENTINE BORDER
The closest border crossing into Argentina is at Bermejo (5-6 daily; 4hr), a town just over
200km south of Tarija.
GETTING AROUND
By micro Unusually for Bolivia, micro stops in Tarija are marked with the destination of
the vehicles that stop at them, though other than travelling to the bus terminal or the airport,
you're unlikely to need to use them.
